Our Dota 2 AI, called OpenAI Five, learned by playing over 10,000 years of games against itself. It demonstrated the ability to achieve expert-level performance, learn human–AI cooperation, and Looks like OpenAI has learned a lot from their defeats at Ti8 last year.

The hero set restriction makes the game very different from how Dota is played at world-elite level (i.e. Captains Mode drafting from all 100+ heroes). However, the difference from regular “public” games (All Pick / Random Draft) is smaller. I mean technically 99 is smaller than 100 but I feel like this is a disingenuous statement from openAI.

12 Aug 2017 Right now, the bot is only capable of playing 1v1, with OpenAI promising 5v5 at next year's tournament. Now that will be something to see

PPO, 1000-unit LSTMs, some basic reward shaping, a few crude randomizing heuristics for exploration, some restrictions on the gameplay format, some tweaking of the discount rate (but still absurdly short time horizons!), some historical checkpointing for self-play, and that's about it. Took mid. Going against my mid opponent.. I was thinking, this guy is pretty good, then I realized the player name was OpenAI (bot).
